What is the cost of safety?

Safe Work Australia published that the total economic estimated cost of work-related injuries and illnesses for the 2008–09 financial year was $60.6 billion dollars, representing 4.8 per cent of GDP for the 2008–09 financial year. For that reason the health and safety legislation of Australian requires occupiers and controllers of premises or workplaces to ensure not only the health and safety of employees, but everyone accessing those premises under their control. Although the thought of maintaining a safe workplace seems an unnecessary burden, it is a small price to pay for an assessment that will minimise the direct and indirect costs associated due to injuries.

What are the risks?

  • Litigation
  • Increased insurance premiums.
  • Decreased brand equity by damaging the organisation’s reputation.
  • Lost time from work by the injured employee.
  • Cost of recruitment, replacement and training.
  • Cost of investigation reports.
